Keysville, VA — The Charlotte County man who rampaged through a so-called ‘Gun Free Zone‘ Monday morning has been described by his wife as “lazy” and very “non-active” around the home.
Del Wilkes, 42, was arrested Monday after he allegedly walked into All-Starz Heating & Cooling carrying an assault-style rifle and fired several shots, according to police.
The suspect reportedly told police he was doing a community service by warning them about the dangers of ‘Gun Free Zones.’
The incident caused mass panic, with several businesses going into lockdown as police swarmed the neighborhood after receiving the call shortly before 9 a.m.
Police said Wilkes walked into the front door of ASH&C and yelled, “Is this a gun-free zone” before firing off multiple live rounds with an AR-15, hitting no one but causing “extensive damage to the property.”
Wilkes has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon.
Those who know Wilkes best told Gish Gallop he kept mostly to himself and was known to binge heavily on straight black coffee, chocolate donuts, and conservative talk radio. Wilkes is also linked to a local “patriot militia,” known as APART.
“I’d see him every morning,” said Stephen Myers, owner of Cakewalkers Bakery, “he was quiet, didn’t like a whole lot of small talk [and] had that classic blank expression on his face. I knew something was a bit off with the guy, but I didn’t see this sh*t coming.”
Looking back, several of Wilkes’ co-workers at Keysville Auto Repair say they should have seen the warning signs. “He pretty much fits all the criteria of an active shooter,” said Mark Freeman, “minus the whole being active part.”
