Iowa Hill, CA — Recent Vacaville, CA transplant Tommy Empire was not sure if the Iowa Hill, CA general store was actually a grocery store or somebody’s kitchen when he visited the remote outpost on Sunday. Mr. Empire left his Cedar Ridge home for a Sunday drive with his wife Peggy to Iowa Hill in Placer County, California.
“Holy crap we’re not in Kansas anymore,” said Mr. Empire in a Gish Gallop telephone interview. “These people don’t have any power and just got telephone service last year. This is America, right?”
According to his wife Peggy, they set out to find “a new place that they’ve never been before” and ended up at the top of Iowa Hill in Placer County.
“I wanted to get Tommy out of the house,” said Ms. Empire. “He’ll sit around all day complaining about things if you don’t get him out. So I saw a YouTube video about this old bridge over the American River, so I told him we’re going to go see it.”
According to Mrs. Empire, they made it down from Colfax to the North Fork of the American River and had a “good walk” across the teetering and questionably sound suspension bridge. Then she came up with an idea.
“I told Tommy, ‘let’s go all the way up to Iowa Hill on the side of the cliff,'” continued Mrs. Empire. “Tommy didn’t like that idea, seeing as how steep that road was. But I gave him ‘the look’ and he finally said OK.”
