Penn Valley, CA — Area gun collector, current Donald Trump supporter and 2nd Amendment activist Jason Dant quipped on his Facebook that recent school “shooters” are the best example of a ‘well-regulated militia’ mentioned in the Constitution. It is unclear whether his status update was a true statement of belief or an incendiary “troll” designed to engage his online enemies. Either way, the Facebook post drew more than its share of ire from the popular online social media site.
“Of course I’m outraged that someone would use the slaying of innocent students to promote their gun agenda,” said Nevada City’s self-appointed spokesperson Sairhra Ramun. “But I’m not surprised. These knuckleheads have to get it through their thick, paranoid, NRA-padded skulls that not everyone is coming for their guns. On the upside, at least we know they can actually read given how they parse the 2nd amendment.”
As for Mr. Dent, he took on a somewhat defiant and arguably unstable defense when questioned about his comments, which seemed to suggest a personality disorder.
“Look, it’s people like me who protect all the people who want to seize my weapons,” ranted a Mr. Dant as he spoke heroically of himself in the third person. “The truth is just too harsh for some people, you know. If a few people have to die to protect my 2nd Amendment rights, that’s uncomfortable, but it’s just the way it is. A militia is what the people say it is, not what the government tells us it is.”
His insensitive and garish comments come on the heels of the latest shooting at a Roseberg, Oregon community college. The gunman, 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer, was a man of few words except on the topic of guns according to people familiar with him.
“When we talked about guns and hunting, he was real open about it,” said Mr. Harper-Mercer’s next door neighbor Louie Flores. “But anything about what was going on in his life, he really didn’t say too much at all.”
As for Mr. Dant, sensing that his marginal position on gun rights might draw unnecessary attention to him and his arsenal of 27 guns, he wanted to make it clear that he’s a caring citizen first and foremost.
“Look this is not about the loss of life at these schools, as horrible as that is,” continued Mr. Dant, his tone shifting to one less strident and dramatic. “But the 2nd Amendment is at the core of personal liberty and it trumps people’s right to what they think is safety. Because if we take the guns away from law-abiding citizens, only the criminals will have them.”
